Careers, Volunteering & Work Experience

Working in Public Libraries

If you are interested in more information about working in Public Libraries or qualifications/course availability please visit: www.alia.org.au.

All employees and volunteers of Your Library Ltd. must be double vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they have an acceptable certification from a medical practitioner that they are unable to receive a dose.

Work Experience and Industry Placement

Work Experience and Industry Placement spaces are available in both semesters; we may suspend the application process if all places are taken. Please note that branches only take between 1-2 students per term, depending on the size of the branch.
What is Work Experience?

Work Experience is the short-term placement of students with ‘host’ employers, to provide insights into the library as a workplace. Students (typically in Year 10) are placed with employers primarily to observe and learn – not to undertake activities which require extensive training or experience. We accept Work Experience students from secondary schools. Work Experience applications must be made at least four weeks ahead of your planned commencement date.
What is an Industry Placement?

Industry Placements are frequently a required component of tertiary-level information services degrees. We are happy to accommodate students undertaking their mandatory Industry Placement. They are typically 10-day intensive placements designed to provide practical industry experience.

  • Youth organisations undertaking community service certificates, for example Queen’s Guide, Duke of Edinburgh etc. should submit an application for Work Experience.
  • All enquiries about Community Service Placement from the Department of Corrective Services or Specialist Work Company Placements for special needs clients should be directed to:

To be a successful TSO you must have an affinity with technology – at any time of the day a library customer asks for help – we cannot pre-determine their questions, their devices or even their own capabilities. More often or not they have been told by a friend that the “lovely person at the library will help” – so be prepared.

Your team colleagues often look to you for support. You manage and facilitate weekly booked one-on-one sessions – developing technology literacy skills. These sessions may not necessarily be held in the library e.g. sessions could be provided at Aged Care Facilities. You may be asked to lead TSO sessions about a variety of technology devices in bigger group sessions again not necessarily in the library.

The ability to train and provide the impetus to learn is essential. Train the Trainer training is provided.

You support in-house Technology training programs – You are your Branch Champion. To ensure success you need to build an excellent working relationship with your team, colleagues and the wider regional network of fellow TSO’s.

You also provide first point of contact customer service. You undertake routine library tasks, keep the library looking attractive and inviting, and assist library staff as required. You must:

  • Have a love of working with people, high-level interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
  • Be prepared to muck in when your team needs you from setting up tables and chairs for events, participating in festivals to returning and shelving library materials

Your job is always changing and we encourage you to take the initiative and to give it your best.
